Currently the iOS version of the NYPL-built ereaders offer a copy/paste mechanism within the reader. This function is meant to allow a user to look up words or phrases, create annotations, and select content for quotes for academic or research use. There is a companion ticket, https://jira.nypl.org/browse/SIMPLY-2383, to implement this correctly in Android as well.
In the Open eBooks context, the presented ebooks have perpetual access licenses generously donated by publishers and the distributor Baker and Taylor (B&T). They have strong concerns about piracy and have made it a condition of our MOU that generic copy/paste be removed. However, we want to retain the copy/paste mechanism for SimplyE and we still want our young Open eBooks patrons to be able to look up a word without interrupting their reading. Therefore, we have to implement several features in order to satisfy all these needs:
- Create a toggle that will disable generic copy/paste in selected SimplyE front ends
- Add the ability to select a word, and
- Add a dictionary feature to the app that can be implemented with several different language options.
