In its current incarnation this is primarily an NYPL-specific issue.

We've lost track of some of our open-access books and the URLs we have on file for them now give 404s. An example is the eLiburutegia edition of From the Earth to the Moon. To see this, visit this URL in your web browser and authenticate as an NYPL patron:

Then, visit this URL in your web browser:

This will redirect you to http://s3.amazonaws.com/oabooks.nypl.org/eLiburutegia%20ID/ELIB201600550.epub, which gives a 404 error.

I don't know how many other titles have this problem, but we periodically get patron reports of books that can neither be downloaded nor returned. This problem was reported for the Project Gutenberg edition of Pragmatism: A New Name for Some Old Ways of Thinking, but I was able to download and return the book on iOS.

We should use SMA-82 as a way of addressing this issue on the mobile side. But we shouldn't be offering books in our catalog that we can't actually download. We went through a long period of scrounging open-access books from a wide variety of sources before deciding that we could do with open-access content from just a couple of sources like Feedbooks and Standard eBooks. Random glitches in that years-long process have probably caused this issue.

Some possible ways to address the problem:

• Try to download every open-access book in our collection and suppress the licensepools where the download fails.
• Remove all the open-access books in our collection and do complete fresh imports from a smaller number of sources.
